Port Harcourt - The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Friday explained that doctors were assisting Ebola virus patients by replacing their lost fluid to get well quick.
“The electrolyte you have lost is replaced. We need to ensure that if you need blood, we give you blood transfusion.
Ebola virus can be managed. It is not a death sentence.’’
Chukwu, who spoke with newsmen in Port Harcourt, added however that the virus does not have a specific drug yet and that many diseases were like that.
“We have not been able to get a reliable vaccine. So, all the vaccines are going through clinical trials. Hopefully, we will get one soon. But, for now, we don’t have. But we do manage.”
“Most things these days are experimental.”
Some may become the drugs, but it is too early because they go through trials before production’’, he emphasized.
Chukwu said the doctors treating the patients know what to do.
“There are things the doctors must do when treating persons suffering from Ebola disease so that their immunity can be sufficient to handle it.”
“The doctor must explain everything to the patient who must give an informed consent so that he will be able to decide whether to take it or not,” Chukwu added.
